FOLLISTATIN (Activin-Binding Protein) is a recombinant version of the endogenous activin-binding protein follistatin, which binds to activin, a protein involved in cell growth and regulation of follicle-stimulating hormone. Follistatin prevents activin from inducing cell overgrowth that leads to cancer. Follistatin is also being investigated for treatment of inflammatory disease like asthma and colitis.
Mechanism of Action
Follistatin acts by sequestering activin, a protein that induces growth and proliferation. Overexpression of activin can result in aberrant cell growth and predispose one to cancer. Follistatin counteracts activin by sequestering it into an inactive complex, thereby preventing cell growth.
